Renan Leite, the PhD candidate at the University of Lisbon working on the EcoPeak4Fish project, presented the key outputs from the project at the X Iberian Congress of Ichthyology (SIBIC 2024) held in Catalonia from June 18-21, 2024.
The SIBIC congress, organized by the Iberian Society of Ichthyology and the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia, is a biennial event that addresses scientific and management challenges related to various aspects of ichthyology.
This year’s edition, themed “Fishes for Future”, featured a joint session between SIBIC 2024 and the Life MigratoEbre project on June 18 in Tortosa. The main conference took place from June 19-21 in Vic, covering topics on freshwater and marine fish as well as conservation aquaculture, and was open to researchers from across the globe.
Leite’s presentation highlighted the key findings and outcomes of the EcoPeak4fish project, targeting the protection of fish populations affected by hydropeaking – rapid and frequent fluctuations in river flow caused by hydropower operations. He presented the flow-refuges, an innovative solution to mitigate the impacts of hydropeaking on aquatic ecosystems and fish communities.
