Last week we had the pleasure to participate in the 19º Congresso da Água that took place from 21 to 24 March in the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC) in Lisbon. This conference is held every second year and is dedicated to water. This year the theme was “Viver com a Água” (live with water) where water scarcity e drought was debated. The water quality, water needs by the various economic and environmental sectors and their conflict of interests, surface and underground water reserves, alternative water sources and efficiencies, and coastal planning were other issues highlighted.
In total, we presented three communications reflecting the EcoPeak4Fish results from Task 1 & 2 and a brief overview of the hydropeaking impacts and how we can mitigate them. Maria João Costa presented the communication “The use of flow-refuges by endemic fish species under simulated pulsed flows: insights from flume research”, José Maria Santos the communication entitled “Efeito de hidropicos induzidos por pequenas centrais hidroelétricas no uso sazonal e ontogenético do microhabitat de leuciscídeos e salmonídeos nativos” and Isabel Boavida the overview of the hydropeaking and the nice teaser of the EcoPeak4Fish entitled “Hydropeaking: how to assess and mitigate impacts”.
